At 323 metres, it is the world's tallest all-residential building and the tallest skyscraper in the Southern Hemisphere when measured to the spire (Eureka Tower in Melbourne is taller to the roof, however). In comparison, the Eiffel Tower is 300 metres when its 24 m antenna is excluded. Q1 overtook the 21st Century Tower in Dubai, United Arab Emirates as the world's tallest residential tower. However, when the currently under construction 395 m, 89 floor 23 Marina and the 107 floor Princess Tower are completed in the next few years, Dubai will take back the title of the world's tallest residential tower. It is the 20th tallest building in the world, dwarfing the Gold Coast skyline until the 240 m Soul and 220 m Circle on Cavill are built.
Q1 was designed by Atelier SDG, and its form was inspired by the Sydney 2000 Olympic torch and the Sydney Opera House. The name was given in honour of members of Australia’s Olympic sculling team of the 1920s – Q1.
It was developed by The Sunland Group and built by Sunland Constructions. The building was the Silver Award winner of the 2005 Emporis Skyscraper Award, coming in second to Turning Torso in Sweden.
The observation deck at level 77 is the world's only beachside observation deck. It has two stories with room for 400 people.
Facts
- The elevators (by KONE) are the fastest in Australia, travelling at 9.0 meters per second (1772 ft/min).
- Q1 boasts the highest swimming pool in Australia (15m x 6m), located in the penthouse on level 74, 217 meters above ground level.
- The 74th floor has the highest external balconies in Australia, 217 meters above ground.
- The level 60 skygarden holds a 30 meter high rainforest with an outdoor terrace observatory 180 meters above street level.
- Powerful arc lights illuminate the spire and are visible from 200 kilometers away.
- The stainless steel spire has internal access and tapers from 1.8 m to .8 m in diameter.
- The spire weighs 110 tonnes and was put up in 8 tonne segments during June and July 2005, reaching full height on July 18.
- Q1 Tower has the same number of apartment levels as Eureka Tower with 74.
- The oval-shaped spire is one of the world's longest at 93.5 meters. It starts at level 77 (230 meters high) and extends 47 meters above the glass fin.
- Q1 is the tallest all-residential tower in the world.
- Q1 became the tallest self-supported structure in Australia on completion, surpassing the 274-meter Mount Isa Chimney Stack. The views from Level 77 and 78 are a highlight of any visit to the Observation power binoculars, children's activity program, Skybar cafe and lounge bar for coffee and drinks, plus a high definition cinema presentation on Level 78 screening from 8am to 5pm daily.
The Skylight room on Level 78 is available for functions, weddings and events prior to 8am and after 6pm daily.

Located only 100m from the golden beaches and only a couple of minutes to the heart of Surfers Paradise. A 5 min drive to Pacific Fair shopping centre, Jupiter's casino and transfers available to all main theme parks
Q1 is 22.5m taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, It is the tallest structure in Queensland and the 19th tallest structure in the world.
From the public observation decks on levels 78 and 79 you can see as far north as Brisbane and as far south as Byron Bay.
The sleek glass tower is visible from almost everywhere on the Gold Coast.
Q1 is a leap forward for Surfers Paradise apartment block design. Compared to some of the Vegas-style, salmon-coloured apartment blocks that were thrown up in the heady'80s, Q1 brings a much-needed touch of sophistication to the Surfers Paradise skyline.
Developer Sunland, responsible for the glamorous Palazzo Versace on Main Beach aimed to create a 21st century tower in Surfers. The architects were from Sunland's own in-house design team, headed by company founders, Soheil Abedian, an architect, and his son Sahba.
Sunland also enlisted the world's greatest swimmer Ian Thorpe to promote the project, and the superfish will also be among the building's more than 2000 residents.
Originally, two 40 to 45 storey towers were considered for the site. Sunland decided it would be far better to put one tower on top of the other and retain the rest of the site as landscaped space for the use of Q1 residents.
"By default we created the world's tallest residential tower because it was never intended to start off with," Sahba Abedian said. "It was simply a way of making the best use of space at the base of the building."
Vertical village
The site on which Q1 stands is over 10,000sqm, while the building's footprint is just 1200sqm.
Filling the space on the ground level is a luxury spa resort, state-of-the-art gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, beach lagoons, swimming lagoons, water features, and tropical landscaped gardens.
Innovarchi, the Sydney-based designers that worked on Renzo Piano's Aurora Place, was commissioned to create a $15 million entrance feature around the base of the building.
"The whole design philosophy is to generate a glass-encased structure, bringing in light both internally and externally," Mr Abedian said.
"The notion of transparency flows through each apartment.”
"It's a very crystal-like form and the fragility permeates the entire structure."
